This review is going to be about the book “The Hunger Games”. The author of the book is
Suzanne Collins. The genre of the novel is science fiction and adventure. The author's
purpose of “The Hunger Games” is to entertain. The author made the story as suspenseful
as possible from the beginning of the novel. The setting takes place in an unspecified time in
the future, and its located in the fictional world of Panem. All the wealth in the country is in
the Capitol and people in the 12 districts are constantly in fear of starvation.
The main character of the story is a 16-year-old girl named Katniss Everdeen. Katniss and
her family struggle to stay alive due to starvation and poverty. Each year, as a punishment
for the failed rebellion by District 13, the 12 Panem districts are forced to attend the reaping
so that one boy and one girl from each district can attend the Hunger Games. The story
begins on the day of reaping at District 12. This was going to be the 74th hunger games.
Prim Katniss’s 12-year-old sister is selected as one of the tributes. Having lost their father at
a young age, she isn’t going to let her mother lose her too. She volunteers to take her
sister’s place, and together with Peeta Mellark, both tributes will represent district 12.
Katniss and Peeta ride the train to the Capitol. On the train, Katniss gets to eat the richest
and most delicious food. They both get to know Effie their escort and Haymitch. The Games
are held in an arena. When they begin, Katniss rushes away from the bloodbath and uses
her survival skills to develop a strategy. She sleeps in trees and hunts. Each night, faces of
the dead tributes are broadcasted into the sky. The Game-makers are those who design the
Games, they continue to manipulate the surroundings to keep the Games entertaining.
Katniss Everdeen is the main character and protagonist of the story. She is a survivor, loyal,
and loving person. She shows her love and willingness to fight for her loved ones, for
example when she volunteered to offer herself in place of her sister as the tribute. Prim is
Katniss’s 12-year-old sister. She’s selected at the reaping in an unexpected sad turn of
events. However, Katniss volunteers to take her place in an act of selflessness. This was the
first act of defiance by Katniss and what brought her to the spotlight. Gale is Katniss’s friend
and hunting partner. She is unsure of the feelings she has for him. One of the main things I
like about the Hunger Games is Katniss’s courage and how she will do anything to protect
her friends and loved ones. She has the characteristics of a strong, brave, caring and faithful
girl. The second thing that I liked about the Hunger Games is the twists and turns during
reading the book. The novel kept me on my toes almost all of the time. Not only do tributes
have to fight each other, but they have to deal with obstacles such as dealing with mutated
creatures, dodging deadly traps and deciding whether or not to risk their lives for the sake
of rewards such as medication, food and other things that help them survive!
In conclusion, reading the “Hunger Games” will certainly be an experience to remember. I
loved every little part of the book. It inspired me to read more books. I would defiantly
recommend it to others.
