It has a great concept, and at times can be genuinely funny, but the show as a whole just doesn't work for me on any level. Star Trek's always had humour, but the humour of Lower Decks is mostly just oversold slapstick with the occasional reference to the rest of the franchise. The dialogue and pacing are both too fast for me to feel immersed, and the characters don't feel like real people - let alone Starfleet Officers. Also, I really don't know who the target audience is. The show feels like a cleaned up Rick and Morty. It's too adult for a child to watch (swearing, violence, innuendo and sexual references), but the humour is too childish and the whole thing too empty for it to be interesting to most adults. I'm just confused by the whole thing.
It does feel very American, so maybe my confusion is just a cultural thing? I don't know. Whatever the reason, I don't get it. But 2 stars for the concept, the occasional good joke, and some really nicely animated scenes
