Massive letdown.
The film began interestingly, but going onwards, it was a total mess. It presents itself a historical biographical film but centers more around the awkward love life of Napoleon and his disinterested wife.
Instead of cringe & awkward humming sounds signaling Napoleon wants to have an heir with Josephine, Scott could have spent his resources on actually portraying so many interesting and more relevant aspects to Napoleon's life; where is the Battle of Trafalgar and the French-Spanish defeat? Where is the Peninsular War? Where is the enthronement of Napoleon's brother on the Spanish throne? Where is his young portrayal where he shows his huge military potential & genius? Where all of these things? This movie showed nearly nothing that actually was relevant to Napoleon's life and actually made him one of the most important figures in European & world history.
All I got from this movie is that he was an awkward creep, only caring about his heirs. No military genius, no intellectual man, no man interested in history and inspired to be like his childhood idols (except for 1 or 2 unconvincing lines somewhere in the movie), no showcasing of his huge influence in the world.
Ridley Scott's attempt at ending the movie with Napoleon's last words doesn't relay anything; it is ironic at best: "France... Army... Josephine". Besides Josephine, nothing in this movie validates this quote.
Absolute disappointment and waste of talent.
