It pains me to give a Sarah J Maas book this low of a score. I’m a huge fan of her work. But this book was not well written. It jumps around a lot. It made me not like Bryce or Hunt’s characters as much, because of the weird tense petty arguments that really didn’t align with their past personalities up to this point. Bryce became bordering on a villain to me with her commentary on the Fae and fighting with everyone. Hunt was weirdly quiet and aloof, and didn’t even really talk through any of the things he went through in the first half of the book.
I was so over the overwhelming amount of Tharion and Ithan dialogue by the first half. It was like I missed a memo that they were now as important as main characters.
I feel that someone must have strongly pushed for using Rhysands name to gain purchases and hype around this book, because he has like 1 scene actually talking to Bryce. Not exactly a great image to be selling.
The amount of scenes of them going through caves was a bit much. Also I think the whole overtaking the Asteri plot could have easily been like half the book, and have the other half showing how Bryce is as a leader and building their new world.
I would have loved to learn more about Lidia and Baxian, and Ruhn deserved a better storyline than just ending on “well my girlfriend and I got our own place”.
Overall, the book just felt sloppy. It felt like something that was rushed and not edited very well. I absolutely love every other book in the Maasiverse, but this was a first for me and I kinda wish I would have just read the plot online and saved myself several hours.
