these comments show how little our collective attention spans have come. “too much talking”? really? it’s a layered show about therapy.
it’s a shame that people are comparing steven carell’s role in this, to his role on “the office”, as they seem to have missed the nuanced intensity he portrayed during “seeking a friend for the end of the world”.
this show is subtle brilliance at its core. a therapist, treating a psychopath (by force), while also treating himself via his disassociative sessions with his former (now, deceased) therapist, charlie (played by the infamous alan grier).
we see alan (carell) break down on multiple levels. first, out of fear, then out of self-reflection. the moments of familial flashbacks give more honest depth to his character, than the serial killer/psychopath that he’s treating.
basically, if you’re a reader, a writer or a genuine film buff, this show will keep you tuned in from beginning to end.
however, if you happen to have the attention span of a squirrel, then, this isn’t for you.
