This is our new Star Trek. There's no question about it. Smart, thoughtful, forward-thinking, optimistic, genuinely humanistic (instead of the absurdly conformist, jaded, myopic, corporate, ironically regressive "progressivism" you find in Star Trek: Discovery and similar franchises going down the wrong, illiberal path). The only difference between Orville and standard Trek is the additional humor, which despite what "critics" say is far more sophisticated than "fratboy jokes"; it works to enhance the relatable character relationships and actually makes the show more realistic than classic Trek in a way. In the real world, co-workers share office banter. TNG showed us a society that was just a bit too sterile at times. In any case, The Orville is everything Trek fans thirst for. The futurism, brainy philosophical and political problems to be solved rather than people just shooting at each other, and a vision of the future where mankind has transcended and is united rather than divided by the squabbles and identity group conflicts that plague our current age. Plus jokes. And if you don't know how to laugh at a joke, I don't know what to tell you. Grow up I suppose.
