*Contains minor spoilers*
The curse of trilogies lives on.
The two stars are for the beauty of the game and the decent puzzles *a lot later on* in the game.
First things first: The new developers were able to copy the look of Little Nightmares, but they were unable to copy the soul.
I donโt understand why they would make a third game when they knew they had such huge shoes to fill.
The monsters were very cringey and hard to watch, not scary at all.
Sound design was terrible. Itโs so important because itโs what gives you such a heavy, dreaded feeling. It sets the tone of the game, when to be afraid, what the developers want you to feel.
Examples:
-When youโre approaching the Pale City, the game makes it clear this place is something to fear. More so than usual, I mean.
-Every time Six ate, it gradually gets more dramatic so you can feel the impact of her actions.
-The slow, sinister music being chased by the Thin Man paired with running in slow motion to make you panic more.
-Every time they introduced a new boss, it was grating to the ears.
The developers of the third game didnโt seem to understand when or how to deliver this.
LN3 also relies a lot on ideas from the first two games.
Light from an eye that turns living things into stone.
Puppets that are very similar to the school bullies.
A factory that is clearly meant to look like the Maw.
Removing a mask at the end of the game.
Collectibles that are dolls, but then they add the ceramic Lady figures from LN1 and the glitches from LN2. Why not just stick with the dolls because theyโre exclusive to the third game?
But my biggest problem with the game was the story.
Or extreme lack of.
If youโre going to make a third game after LN2 you have to be close to matching it, actually match it or surpass it.
Each honestly a feat but that should be expected.
LN3 isnโt even a quarter of the plot of the first game.
The game had no bigger picture.
There was no point or meaning to any event or place.
LN1 you go through each area/phase of what they do to kidnapped children, and what the Maw is.
LN2 after you rescue Six and get to the Pale City, you are slowly shown the corruption coming from the Signal Tower, how Mono is connected to it and the gradual decline of Sixโs humanity.
But LN3 has no connection between areas. You just go place to place for no reason.
Also, showing one of the kids full face, which they did, destroys the mystery of their identify, which was the point and style of Little Nightmares.
Beyond disappointing after such a long wait for one of my favourite game series.
