Great movie! I mean it was better than the original... It had character with diverse personalities who weren't just "macho manly men", it had great references to the original, there was comedy, drama, thrill, and the plot had a very serious goal. This film will definitely become a classic. The throwback scenes were very intentional and feel-good. From the music to the memories to the little quotes that had been said in the first film, it was all awesome. A friend of mine, who served in the navy for over 20 years, commented on how one of the scenes with all the men getting the plane ready looked identical to the original film's scene. This is because not much has really changed in the organization and routine that workers have when it comes to getting the planes ready. The romance diem unnecessary. Penny was not in the original film but she was mentioned as that "admiral's daughter" who Maverick got into trouble with. Opinions will vary on whether or not she should have been included. Sometimes action movies don't need to have the romantic relationship between characters. It has been repeated over and over again where the super awesome spy/cop/pilot has a woman who only shows up in one movie. Otherwise, it did have very interesting characters and development that differed from the first film.
