Oof. What to say. I love vampires, I love drama and romance, and I loved these books when they came out and I was in my early twenties. For context, I read all fantasy romance drama but Anne Rice has always been my favorite. Twilight was like a guilty pleasure. But maybe I was just too old for this one. My eyes could not stop themselves from rolling backwards while reading, and even in my complete boredom and isolation of working from home during covid, I found myself more bored of Edward's constant whining. Dear Gods. When he finally gets over wanting to murder Bella, he has the audacity to get angry with her for making jokes about FALLING IN THE LAUNDRY. Not to mention how controlling and jealous and possessive he is. Not cute. There were a few things I did like, such as Bella having an actual fleshed out personality, and the thrilling car chase near the end that we didn't get to see in Twilight. 20 car pile up and Carlisle sedating humans left and right. Fun times. I'm glad I read it. But I'll never be able to read it again. I haven't punished my eyes like this since 50 shades freed.
