What a frustrating experience with this game. My wife and I loved Divinity 2, and played the whole co-op experience on my PS4 back in 2020. When I heard they were releasing BG3 for PS5 I was psyched we’d be able to relive that experience again. Got a new slim PS5 for Xmas and bought BG3 the first night.
Unfortunately the co-op on console seems completely broken. It crashed multiple times while we were making our characters, multiple times throughout Act 1, and before we finally figured out a loophole, it was crashing every time we opened it up as co-op (only way to get it to work is open a single player file, fast travel to another region, and then let player 2 join). That worked for us for a while, getting just the occasional crash. Now we’re halfway through Act 2 and it’s crashed mid battle multiple times. Meaning we’ve had to redo multiple battles and we’re just loosing all interest in the game because of it.
The game itself is a pretty solid Larian experience. Lots of exploration, tactical battles, and pretty entertaining characters/plot lines to follow. Though there’s definitely some things we preferred in DOS2: battles were more fun and dynamic, where the environment played a big role and you could really get creative with elemental spells, and there was generally more customization options in DOS2 that we enjoyed. And frankly the characters were more memorable and fun to play with. The Red Prince, Lohse, Fayne, the dwarf, they all felt quite different and unique. Everyone in this game seems a little more generic, and most conversations veer towards relationships which we just don’t have interest in. And since we’re not D&D players, we don’t really vibe with the rules of the game. It just feels clunky and rigid and we generally don’t feel as free as we did in DOS2. Also not fun when it felt like the majority of our attacks were missing in the first half of the game. The graphics and cinematics are clearly an improvement in BG3, but overall the gameplay in DOS2 was a little more flexible and fun, not sure exactly what it is.
We’re probably about 50 hours in, but not sure if we’ll ever be able to finish this game as it’s just always finding new ways to crash on us. After so many years in beta, and all this built up anticipation, so far it’s been a pretty disappointing experience.
If the game worked I’d give it like a 8ish, with DOS2 being a 9.5. With it so buggy like this I’d have to say a 6 or 7. It’s just unreasonable how broken it is currently.
