This is a wonderful coming of age book, by Barbara Trapido, and some of the characters reappear in some of her later books. You don't have to read them in order, but it's fun to see how the characters develope as time passes. Katherine, the heroine in this book, grows and changes in a way that makes you examine your own life.

Wonderful cast in this film, which is so well written. It starts slowly, but builds in both plot and emotional pull. By the end, I was totally drawn into the world it shows. I've seen it a few times, and it still has the same effect.
