Hearts Beat Loud was disappointing.
The music is fine, but not stellar. The acting is halting, as though the director kept saying, "Not yet, oh, okay, proceed, nope, not yet." The scenes are WAY too long and don't accomplish enough. There's very little tension in the scenes as it seems people are reading their lines. Do we really believe this dad wants his daughter to make a garage band with him instead of going to college?
The production clearly had a very low budget because in this NY area THERE ARE NO OTHER PEOPLE IN THE BACKGROUND. It some ways it was like watching a play, as there's almost no context, no other life going on around the characters (except very minimally in the bar). Ted Danson seems to be reading his lines over Nick's head. It seemed this movie's side purpose was to showcase Nick Offerman's considerable musical talents more than anything else.
