Well....that was certainly interesting. A fair warning in advance; I am a reader of the book series and Penelope and Collin are two of my personal favourite characters and also my favourite pairing. So, I am biased.
To start with the good, I honestly really enjoyed the show up till this point. It's good to be back in that world and the costumes, the venues, the overall ambience and even the music is, as always, fabulous.
However, this is where I enter the plot and I get nitpicky. Although, to be fair, every point I am about to raise is valid. Let us start with the way the ruined Elouise and Pen's friendship. these two were supposed to be each other's constants. Instead, they are now distant and bitter and what not and it's exactly what happens when showmakers believe they can make the books better. For the record, you cannot. The book was perfect. And while this show is perfectly fine up until this point, it is going to descend into inevitable chaos in the next half. It will be unnecessarily messy, and distasteful even, given that is exactly what these people did last season. In a bid to increase the shock factor and scandal impact, they went on introducing plot points that were entirely too messy and completely out of place.
Just like it was completely unnecessary to drag Edwina to the alter last season. It was distasteful and honestly, just completely off-putting. Neither Anthony, nor Kate, as characters, would have ever let it get that far. The whole plot with Marianna was again, completely messy and it’s a mess I am not sure they will be able to clean up in any way that would make sense.
This is now about to descend into discussions of events in the books further down the line so *SPOILER ALERT*
Whistledown never threw mud at any of the Bridgertons. Which is why, while Collin was still furious at Penelope when he found out about her secret, he had no specific reason to outright fault her. Because, the Ms. Thompson plot and the Elouise and Theo plot had never happened. And this, for the record, was the “carriage scene” which means in the books when Collin proposed, he already knew Penelope was Whistledown. And from the ending of S3E4, it seems like that is not going to happen. Unless, of course, Penelope rejects Collin’s proposal. We’ll see what happens, I guess. But safe to say, I do not hold much hope for the next part of this season. Oh, I have no doubt I will enjoy it, but, I am equally certain it’ll make me want to break the screen I will be watching on.
