I think the book is about Stevens sad life and missed opportunities. I was particularly moved and horrified at the same time by his reaction to his father's death (with the tears flowing down his eyes while still stauchly serving his great employer). Also the missed opportunity to have a life with Miss Kenton.
The title is very apt.
