At first, this appeared to be yet another formulaic rom-com idealising a superficial idea of love among upper-middle class white Americans. Kept watching bcs Susan Sarandon tends to be impressive onscreen even with a limited role. Then impressed that 80s heart-throb, Richard Gere, was paired with actresses his age plausibly playing their husband/love interest. Pleasantly surprised by his comedic timing, Keaton and Macy’s chemistry and the loneliness that Sarandon movingly displays towards the latter part of the film. This piece is a gem, a treatise on the terrible gamble that is love and marriage and how our parents’ relationship to each other shape our view of both. For better or worse.
