The 90's references and music inserts are heavy handed, as is the female-empowerment messaging. The plot is kind of weak at multiple points. Some of the fight sequences are too chaotic to properly follow. Still, I enjoyed the movie despite all that. I've heard a lot of people complaining about various characters or the acting, but none of them rose to a level that bothered me. I could fill a screen with nitpicks or plot inconsistencies, but it was fun for me in a relax and enjoy-the-comic-book sense. Wonder Woman did female empowerment better, but Captain Marvel didn't have a terrible finale, merely an adequate one.
Nick Fury and the lead Skrull had the best moments overall. One unneeded answer to a question about Fury was frankly terrible, and one musical choice was so heavy handed it was a 16 ton weight dropping on the point. Don't have high expectations and you're likely to enjoy the movie too. Even the best Marvel movies have big flaws. This isn't the best, but I'd watch it a second time.
