This is an abject horror story about survival, but mostly about the effects of bullying. I found it horrifying & depressing when I read it as a kid. Maybe there's a positive side. I abhorred bullies at an early age, and often stood up for weaker, tormented kids I later became a Social Worker. At 65, .I'm unsure if this was a blessing or a curse. I do recommend reading the book & seeing the film at least once to know who you are, if you don't know already.

This novel was a staple of my childhood. As an only child, growing up in Florida, I was mesmerized, & comforted by this snowy world of sisters. I had seen the earlier films, but, I felt this one was superbly cast, well written, & supremely closer to the story I had imagined in my head as a child than the earlier depictions. A joy to watch, I never tire of it. Am watching it now, at this late hour . Having lost my Mother fairly recently, it comforts me. Susan Sarandon is wonderful as "Marmee ".
