I'm leaving a review in the face of the Paramount+ decision to sell this show off to some other network.
Yes, it's a kids show- but in all honesty, so was TOS.
Prodigy was the first program in this current wave of Trek that actually hit the nail on the head of the *spirit* of Trek. Strange New Worlds is also doing an excellent job, but the point is that Prodigy is an EXCELLENT show. Putting the ideas of the Federation and what it (as well as Trek) stand for in a scenario where we learn in tandem with younger characters is an excellent delivery system / stepping stone into the greater Star Trek universe. The writing for season 1 was absolutely excellent, child-centric, but only occasionally overtly so.
Further: animation is inexpensive compared to live action. You're doing away with a lower cost thing that can only serve as a stepping stone into getting younger viewers into your other content. It's just, stupid.
Further than that, as a subscriber, Paramount promised me access to ALL of the Star Trek things when I signed up for P+, back when Discovery S1 was first teased. You literally advertised this to me in order to get me to give you money every month. There was a hiccup with an HBO agreement to let them use the films for a while, and a bunch of people felt as though they had been misled as to what they signed up for. You finally got the films back, had all the series available, and FINALLY delivered the product that you promised; but now you're chipping off a chunk of Star Trek (and a *good* one at that), and selling it off to some other network? What the hell is wrong with you?
Prodigy is a great concept, great show, and really fun. Paramount is an untrustworthy and misleading entity that has essentially committed an overt act of false advertising; and I hope the fans of this show- the people who have vehemently defended it online and urged others to watch it, hold you accountable. Here's how I am: I used to be a dedicated subscriber who would pay my monthly fee on off-seasons when there wasn't any new content that interested me; because I appreciated what was happening, and wanted to support. My thinking now is that I'll cancel my service until SNW S2 is over, subscribe again once that happens and cancel after I'm done binging. I'll do it for all of the shows I like. Instead of giving you 12 months of subscription, I'll just give you 3.
Stupid.
