This book is excellent. It is best read during, or after, a visit to Madeira. Some knowledge of the places referred to in the writing is very helpful to the unfolding story of the development of the island in the last century. Having visited many times, I have learned things from this book that I would never have found out otherwise. It has provided me with a list of new places to seek out on my next visit. Very well written.
