This is a decent course per se. But it's run without any thought to how people should play golf.
First, many holes are set up not to reward good drives. Greens face away from the fairway and are not receptive at all.
On busy days, the greens receive non legal pga pins. Either too close to the edge or par threes with no line of flight to the flags.
Often in places the balls can not stop near the hole leaving three puts on the table for virtually any double digit handicap.
On a league day this would make sense. But on high traffic weekends when the rounds are pushing 100 usd no one wants a 6 hour round.
Most of the greens are way too form in order to prevent ball marks because the course doesn't want to spend a penny on upkeep.
The cart guys have no idea how yo play golf. Ant question you ask any of their employees about play leaves them looking like deer in headlights.
Today for example the foursome in front of us teed off 20 minutes before us with a group directly in front of them, as it was shortly before when rates drop and those tee times often go unfilled.
(I have my PGA teaching requirements met including my PAT so I know a lot about course management. And I am a low handicap golfer whom has seen and played golf in most states across the country).
Because Blackthorn has no rangers and often doesn't even have starters (because they are too cheap to pay or offer memberships to volunteers) play is entirely unregulated.
We caught them on hole two. They spent more than 20 minutes from tee to green. By the fourth hole we had played almost an hour and a half. We called the clubhouse and sent messages through the carts multiple times and got no response.
By the 6th hole we had 3 groups waiting on a short par 4 with the group in front of us driving all 3 carts to each and every shot, talking, waiting and then proceeding to the next ball.
We ended up requesting someone to come out via another method but when they arrived they said that they would just send them a message to their GPS.
At this point there was 3 full holes between them and the group in front of them.
Play never sped up.
TLDR: The setup is gimmicky. The greens not receptive. The management does not care about the quality of golf and the price is high for what you get. Your round will likely take you 5.5 to 6 hours and you will likely pay around 100 for it.
But hey, they have a new barn. And they ask you please don't hit it with balls.
Speaking of hit with balls. I'd rather be hit in mine than play there on the weekends due to their lack of common sense. I
