Going into this movie with zero expectations, I was entertained. The title promised an action flick with gangsters and that's what it delivered. The dialogue was a little stilted here and there, the story wasn't exceptional or path-breaking, but the performances were good. Kamal Hasaan did very well, Silambarasan was thankfully muted and therefore, good. Aishwarya Lekshmi deserves a special mention for her absolutely moving performance. She had very few scenes, but she was perfect. I don't know why people are so disappointed, judging by the reviews. Why compare it with Nayagan? It was entertaining, and that's pretty much it.

Thug Life

People who say this book is high fantasy have really low standards. The only qualification to that claim is that there are impressive dragons in it. The characters are decent enough, the setting is good, but the core of the plot failed completely. The ending botched whatever potential this story had. The tools that were sought throughout the book were used in a laughable manner in the final battle. There was no cohesion between the different tools, the wielders and, the method of using them to end the battle. The author desperately fit as many heroic acts as possible to try and compensate. There is far better fantasy out there.

The movie fails to capture the sheer depth of the incredible yet tragic story of John Jones. The narrative was poorly translated, the acting was terrible and the movie just didn't work. In the real life story, there were moments of intense gravity that were glossed over or simply not addressed. For those of us who have watched and read hours of details about the events of Nutty Putty, this movie failed in many ways. Even if it was low budget, they could have done much better.
