In my honest opinion* this film is about a 6/10. There are approximately 5 actors in the film, 3 of them have about 2 mins or less of screen time, with or without lines. A lot of the dialogue is via tape recordings
*Spoilers in this review.
The pace of the film in beginning is the same pace of the entire film and after watching so many minutes, I felt vested in the film. If you're seeking action, this is not for you and the trailer is deceptive. If you're looking for a a film to watch when you're in a relaxed place mentally and you want to stay there, watch this film.
It's good but not great and I agree with many others when they've said that the trailer has more action than the actual film.
THE SUMMARY (SPOILER ALERT!!!)
The main character, Sam Waldon (Qualley), seems to be alone for almost half of the film. She's dictating her journey throughout the desolate earth which gave me an excitement of an apocalyptic event and I knew that I was in for a treat. I was wrong about the treat.
Micah (Mackie) drops in from nowhere (literally) and seems to have a chip on his shoulder.
Sam is researching signs of survival in the toxic environment and she has been using bees for subjects. There's mention of the virgin queen bee, which ends of surviving a devastating rainstorm, and Sam's curiosity of life before the apocalyptic event led me to believe that she was a virgin as well.
Micah is determined to take Sam to IO since he allowed his wife to perish, under the false hope given to mankind via Dr. Waldon, Sam's father. There's an insinuated intimate scene which Sam insisted must happen (hint to the ending).
We see that Sam is determined to visit a museum which gives another indication that life will continue, just as she and her father hoped. She's already alluded to seeing a swan and tada, Leda and the Swan where a god seduces a mortal woman and she births a child...
She removed her mask because she dreamed that she was able to breathe on earth without it. We then see Micah traveling to IO, undoubtedly, while Sam remains on earth and is joined by a small child... The end.
