This story is absolutely amazing. The descriptions of Omelas itself are intentionally vague to allow for wiggle room on what the city could be like while still communicating the most important parts. But in extreme contrast to that, the descriptions of the child are intentionally vivid and almost harsh in how much detail is used to describe the child, as a means of truly showing just how miserable it is.
The writing of the allegories here is amazing, subtle enough that you need to truly put thought into it, but not so convoluted that its meaning is indecipherable. The meaning itself of how no happiness comes without sacrifice is incredible and has truly changed my viewpoint on my life.
However, a sad thing I see is people like that 1-star reviewer ranting about abortion and whatnot because they either completely missed the point of the story or just don't want to accept its message. This story has nothing to do with abortion, I think that person just isn't willing to accept that the things that make them happy have cost the happiness of others.
