I've been an Avett Brothers fan basically my entire life, I grew up with my dad cooking dinner to "Laundry Room" or "Shame" or any of the other mind blowing songs by these musical savants. Now without giving my political opinion on any of these songs, I am so incredibly relieved to say that this is a fantastic album. In Judd Apatow's documentary "May It Last: A Portrait of the Avett Brothers", Seth plays a song called "C Sections and Railway Trestles" at the end. I remember when I first saw it I thought it should have been on "True Sadness" or at least on a future album. And it is, and I love it. Though I still like "I And Love And You", "True Sadness", "Emotionalism", and "The Carpenter" better, this was an incredibly enjoyable album. My one and only flaw with this album is that I don't think that they put their best effort into songwriting. It's common knowledge among fans that The Avett Brothers are songwriting geniuses, just think of "I Wish I Was" or "Murder in the City" or "Morning Song" etc. Overall my favorite songs on this album (in no particular order) are "High Steppin", "Locked Up", "C Sections and Railway Trestles", "Bleeding White", and "We Americans". Honestly I don't care much for the other songs on the album. Overall, "Closer Than Together" has some amazing songs, and some forgettable songs, but one thing that I believe will never change is The Avett Brothers' ability to one hundred percent speak from the heart in every song they write.
