If not the best, certainly one of the best war movies ever. Not your typical B&W simplification, full of twists and turns, unexpected developments, well-developed, multi-layered characters, you name it, it's all there. And the most unlikely love story between a Jewsih girl whose whole family got killed by the Germans and a Nazi officer whose whole family got killed by indiscriminate Allied bombing? Priceless! Two people who'd found each other in the madness of war ... I must admit the movie is quite dark & depressing, when the most likable male character is an SS commandant, you know it's full of ugly (not just in aesthetic sense) & unpleasant people!
