Uncharted is such a cool story with amazing characters and the games always had you thinking “How is Nathan Drake even alive?”Now, I did backseat game this series while my boyfriend enjoyed climbing and shooting a bunch of different men who literally followed you everywhere no matter where you went. So while I haven’t played through them myself, I do think I can compare the movie and games accurately. This movie did what it was intended to do. It took you on a journey with Nathan Drake and Victor Sullivan in a new way. If you expected this movie to come out and be the games then you don’t know film. I was not expecting to sit down and watch the cutscenes from all the Uncharted games again. I was anticipating something a lot worse than this movie turned out to be. So honestly, if you wanted to watch all the Uncharted games in a two hour movie then this isn’t for you. On the other hand if you went to see the movie after playing the games and you went in expecting a new take on the story - then I think you will like this as much as I did. Was it everything I wanted it to be? Well no, after literally yelling “Daddy Sully” at the tv every time I got to see Sully during the games I can tell you I was not a fan of the way Sully was written. At the same time I can appreciate the fact they were trying to show a more money hungry version of our beloved Victor Sullivan. It felt to me Mark Wahlberg didn’t have much to work with. Not to mention, it’s not like Sully and Nathan Drake met the way they did in the games so you can’t expect the relationship to be the same. I can say this in full confidence as a fan of Spider-Man. Tom Holland was not Spider-Man, he felt like Nathan Drake. It is really hard to separate the two when Spidey is a beloved super hero but I really enjoyed Tom Holland’s interpretation of Nathan Drake. Once again if you go in asking for 30yr old Nathan it’s not what you are gonna get. This version of the story is meant to explore other ideas and that’s what it did. While you will always see bits of Tom Holland being a little awkward I did enjoy the way he toned it down and tried to play a more sophisticated character. I can also say I really liked how they interpreted Chloe. She is exactly what I was expecting and I couldn’t ask for more. There were two things I disliked 1) The script. The dialogue was not there and left some scenes making you feel awkward. As well as a lot of the scenes between Nathan and Sully left you thinking Would they actually say that? 2) The lack of puzzles and the Journal. Nathan Drake in the games keeps everything he finds in a Journal. My boyfriend can attest, I loved helping him figure out the puzzles using Nathan Drake’s journal. They did try to adapt this in a way but I think they could have taken it farther. Those who played the games will understand what I mean. Overall, Uncharted was an action movie based on a video game that often times put you in unlikely situations and once again left you asking “How is this man alive?” As a movie based off a video game, I can say this was definitely one of the better adaptations out there. They didn’t try to give you Uncharted 4 they gave you a movie based on the game. If anything the filmmakers played it a little too safe. You could feel in the movie they were very apprehensive in giving us a full blown Uncharted video game experience. At the same time they did try to do what they could with the big action sequences toward the end and as a fan of the games I can say I really did enjoy what this film had to offer.
