My guess is that most of the people who gave this film a one-star never even saw it. I'm sure the reviews would be much higher if the Obamas had not revealed that they were the producers. If someone or some country is trying to take down America, then they've certainly succeded in accomplishing the first stage of the divide and conquer strategy. I liked it despite it having some obvious plotholes. Plus I admit I'll watch anything that stars Julia Roberts. Most of the film was suspenseful and entertaining and parts of it were fantastic. I loved it when Roberts flicked on one light and then turned on another instead and she doesn't see the deer staring at the house. And I thought many of the scenes came from someone's really good imagination. The Teslas in self-driving mode crashing into each other on the highway were awesome and reminded me of stuff from Black Mirror. But then you realize there's no GPS, so they wouldn't be capable of staying on the road. But some of the plotholes are obvious. How could the owner of the home and his daughter have zero way to ID themselves but he just happens to have the key to the liquor cabinet on him? He must have registration in the car and their phones must have their names on them. Plus the contractor knows the neighbors built a survivalist bunker and yet stays in his house. And if the house is being powered by home generators, then wouldn't they try to at least conserve a little? Every light is on including the pool and its filters. I understand being reminded of racism because I never see that getting corrected (Roberts seems to find it hard to believe that the owners of such a home could be black, despite their clothing and car), but I didn't care for the same sort of theme that keeps telling us that females are all smart and males are generally clueless. Males have a suicide rate four times that of females and yet everyone seems focused only on propping up confidence in girls. When's the last time you've seen a TV commercial where the woman does something stupid and the man corrects things? And I understand not being warned of anything specific. Someone commented about the film being unbelievable because we have a great military, so where is it? Well, it isn't like we haven't been surprised attacked before. Pearl Harbor, 911. The TV just warns people to take cover. I was on Maui when our phones sent out an alert telling everyone to take cover. We didn't know if it was a tidal wave or what so I just sat on the balcony with a drink and watched the whales breaching. I thought if this is the end, then this view is perfect. Turned out it was a false missile attack, but we were given zero idea what the threat was from the hotel or our phones. Otherwise, I found it very entertaining despite the obvious holes that nearly every film has, and fun to watch if not a bit scary at moments. Watch it and decide for yourselves. I usually ignore reviews with scores of either 5 or 1.
