I don't know where to start. 14 years ago Avatar was a phenomena because the technology, environment and technical Tsar guns like motion capture, CGI are quite new to majority of the world and are way a head of its time. So even with an out and out commercial plot and screenplay it stood out as a highest grosser till date.
Cut to 2022, people have seen brilliant CGI, production and motion capture in multiple movies, web series, games and other sources. So you can't engage with just quality CGI for 3.5 hours.
For example, the robotic army was brilliant in avatar but we have seen better and bigger in Transformers, Pacific Rim and even in many games. We have seen brilliant CGI in movies like life of pi flying fishes, real player one, even tin tin ..
Having said that kudos to CGI team impeccable work. Those 2 stars are for you.
Coming to major let down, the storyline, as my younger brother rightly pointed out it's like a James Cameron cut of Asuran ( Tamil movie of Dhanush). Jack sully was supposed to be a fighter why on Pandora does he become a low lying family man.
It appeared that James Cameron was carried away by the brilliant CGI created by his team and completely forgot the plot and went on making repeated water shots. If this was made with 3-4 years i.e.s 10 years back then it would have scored over CGI atleast but now with 14 years spent on with so much crew, big production houses.. it's a big big let down.
What exactly are the editors doing all this time....
