Such a let down, such a disappointment of a movie.
First and foremost, the film was advertised in such a way that you would think it's a romantic comedy. It is not.
It was not exciting story-wise, nor aesthetically, and the dialogue did not help it be more interesting. It did have potential in the first 20-ish minutesโ seemed like it was building up to be something interesting, but then it just went flat, with occasional ups that felt quite random but would get my hopes up (for nothing). Don't know if this was intentional choice from the creators to reflect dating experiences most people have today in New York (or other big cities in USA), but it was just not executed in the way that it could've been.
I do understand what the movie was supposed to communicate, I just think it failed to do so.
Maybe, as someone who is not from the United States, I can't wrap my head around the concept of "dating" (I just recently found out that dating and being in a relationship is not the same), but I feel like this is a movie only Americans (or perhaps I should say just New Yorkers) can understand, given that it's a movie that talks about the dating scene in New York.
"Materialists" could've been good, but it was just not. The script and the story did not let the chemistry between leads shine, which is unfortunate because in the promotional videos for the movie, Pedro, Dakota and Chris had amazing chemistry.
