I saw The Creator today, and it was not good. They did everything well enough (as you would expect from a big budget film), except for the story/writing. It had some really stunning visuals, good cinematography & editing, decent acting, and the dialogue was fine. The music was good, just nothing special; it blended in and didn't carry much weight.
The overall plot made sense well enough, it was just weak. But there were a lot of contrivances to make the plot happen, which was painful to watch. And the story/world building had multiple problems. The viewer is asked to believe a lot of things that just don't make sense or require more explanation (which is never provided).
It's normal for a story to take inspiration from other stories, but The Creator felt like it was cobbled together from other movies. As I watched the film, it felt like Star Wars set during the Vietnam war, with the plot lifted from Space Sweepers. Others have noted it was like Blade Runner meets Apocalypse Now, with some District 9 thrown in there. I have not seen Apocalypse Now, but after reading it was set in the Vietnam war, I was like "Yeah, that makes sense." Not all of the borrowing from other films was a bad thing. Some of the visuals were taken straight from Independence Day, which was fine. But overall, it just felt like a mishmash.
If you really want to see the visuals, I'd recommend waiting till this is on a streaming service. Otherwise, give this movie a pass.
