I was interested in watching this show mainly for the secondary characters and the people who play them: Moses Sumney, Jennie Kim, Troye Sivan, Rachel Gusman, Hari Nef, Karl Glusman, etc. I'm a fan of their work in various capacities. I'm not the greatest writer so I'll struggle to say exactly what my issue with the show is, but it's so incredibly over the top. The Weeknd is playing this cult figure who has somehow manipulated his way into having this following of talented young would be stars, but they fail to show any of the enigma or charm that you typically associate with a Charles Manson type. Whenever you hear about cult leaders you hear about this x-factor, this magnetic personality that usually draws in their following and the Weeknd's character fails to show any redeeming qualities in that sense. Because the entire show stands on the premise that The Weeknd is this type character and he fails to be believable, I found it difficult to watch and likely won't finish the series. It's over the top, unbelievable, and poorly written but maybe that's the point? That anybody on set was reading this script and taking it seriously beyond episode one is beyond me. But, of course, it's easy to be a critic. I could never make a cinematic 5-hour torture porno that leaves the audience completely dry between the legs and cackling with laughter. It's honestly actually kind of a feat when you think about it?
