I found this film quite strange. It's largely soulless. MacGregor is quite a fun character. But the script and filmmaking is one note and disjointed. It doesn't feel like a proper cinematic film. There's no dramatic or character arcs or building in scenes, there's no texture to any of the setting, no emotion. Even the humour doesn't come off quite as well as it should. Gyllenhall is an undeniably gifted actor but isn't really given enough acting to do and plays the role a bit too Clint Eastwood and not enough Patrick Swayze.
