A return to what makes Star Trek interesting. Ideas. Unlike recent (IMO) formulaic attempts by Trek to copy the 10-episode-movie trend, this returns to the episodic format. That's all it takes to return to the core of scifi television, interesting ideas and conundrums, problems to be solved and worlds to explore. As a result, we're back to a show that takes risks, regularly introduces new concepts, and beings back the fun and mental stimulation of good old fashioned science fiction. This results in some incredibly strong episodes, with genuine variety. Just what trek has been lacking lately with all the 'exinstential threat, X is the key to all this, pad one episodes worth of story out over 10 with lots of forced personal drama' stuff. It even upgrades one aspect of classic Trek significantly - they often find themselves on planets that don't look just like California. Revolutionary. It's not perfect, but it's a very good core... and if you don't enjoy a particular episode for whatever reason, just wait and the next one will bring up a new plot to explore. Variety is the spice of life. Many ideas make many memorable moments. Score: Return to the reason we liked Trek to begin with / 10
