See the thing I have noticed about this book is that your view of this books keeps on changing as you grow up.So first time when I read it ,I didnt like it cause I thought its about this kid whose a misanthrope and does not have a wider view to life,but when I read it in high school I could totally relate my self to the main protagonist, for instance 1.when he hates phonies-a term used for fakeness 2. he hates the fact when people grow up to lose their innocence 3. he hates it when people do not treat the poor and the needy properly and exploits them, just because they have more money doesnt mean they have the authority to treat people like that. 4.he values kindness among people and consider it as the most rarest and beautiful trait a person can have 5.he loves children as they are the most innocent people in this world . so in my opinion this book isnt that bad at all,it talks about this phase that the main protagonist is going through, which we all have gone through at one point of our life. and to all the parents out there whose worried about the language used in this book ,trust me to get your point right at times profanity is needed ,so instead of focusing too much on the language used, instead focus more on its content, read this book in the point of an angsty teen whose trying to figure out how to fit in this world, these are probably the thoughts your kids may have in their head but maybe theyre too scared to be open about it. so take this book in that sense ,rather than being a prejudice . now let me make this clear,this book doesnt promote violence in anyway trust me ,now all the incidents about school shooting ,john lenons murder was all caused because the person who read this book misread it and interpreted the whole story in the wrong way ; its pretty clear that holden himself doesnt like or promote violence rather he is disgusted by it, , he just wants to save the innocents from any dangers or pits from this world , thats why when his sister phoebe asks him what he wants to be when he grows up,he just says that he wants be the catcher in the rye, so that he could catch those children( which symbolizes innocence) whose playing in the rye field from falling of the cliff(symbolizes loosing of innocence), something we all wish from this seemingly cruel world. Even the author J.D Salinger hates war and he has even served in the world war 2 ,and that war had left a profound impact in his life ,he was completely disgusted by it ,he couldnt even bare the thought of those millions of innocent people who lost their life during this war .The war still tortures him, and i dont think in any way would this man would want to write a book that would promote violence after all he has been through, that would be absurd so dont judge a book before reading it, and do read this book multiples times ,and then you will realize the message of this story ,cause honestly it took me three years to realize it, as i have stated earlier your view of this book changes as you grow up, the more you read it ,the more you relate yourself to this little boy and the more you love it.. i hope this have helped you, cause this book means a lot to me, and now is a part of me... thank you and have a nice day, my dear readers
