Wow. I was on an emotional roller coaster watching Mother. As a parent, grandparent and former child protection worker I was invested in the well being of the children, first and foremost. I did a lot of talking to these characters. Each time an adult witnessed how this family lived and didn't help the children it really bothered me. Every adult who could have helped failed the children.
The phenomenon of abused children being loyal to their abusive parents was one of the most challenging parts of my job. This was as realistic as I have ever seen in a movie about family dysfunction and child abuse. The acting was amazing. I felt like I was secretly watching a real family. I did have empathy for the mother. She needed so much help, probably going back to before she had her son. The last scene was so tender. It felt redeeming and hopeful that the mother was ready to accept help.
I hope many people watch this film. Both abused, abusers and non-abused and , non-abusers. There is so much to take in and reflect on both individually and in discussions with others who watch it.
Thank you to everyone associated with making this film, it's a taboo subject for many people, but it's the reality for many families. This is very mild compared to some of the families I worked with and unfortunately many families out there right now.
Thank you, Netflix for choosing this film.
