I first want to say, seeing the way Disney is approaching newer generations to the classics is understandable. But as someone who is part of an older generation, the classic Little Mermaid was the most memorable movie of my childhood. Taking a more live action route to this classic has ruined it for me. I will always stick to the classics that were released back then.
The first nitpick thing was the opening to the movie. The title opener was the worst one I’ve seen. In the classic, it was barely to never mentioned of Prince Eric’s parents. Going to Ariel in the ocean, she obviously found the things almost similar to classic Ariel. But Scuttle was above the surface in the classic and NOT in the ocean. When Ariel goes to see Prince Eric, she appears in the boat. DOES NOT HAPPEN in the classic! In the classic, Ariel is in the ocean!
King Tritons daughters in the classic are Attina, Alana, Adella, Aquata, Arista, Andrina
and obviously Ariel. In this live action, his daughters are Perla, Indira, Mala, Tamika,
Karina, Caspia, and Ariel. They are different and look nothing like the original characters. For the meeting with the “supposed parents”, that has never happened in the original. Big mistake on Disney’s part.
Now as for the music, having seven years of knowledge on my part, it has completely changed in this live action. It doesn’t sound the same to the original, and they tried WAY too hard to make it good. To where Prince Eric leaves, he DOES NOT sing in the classic! He goes to look for Ariel, who by the way saved his life. Plus, the original songs such as Part of your World, it is not the same, and Disney tried much too hard. In under the sea, Ariel only listens in the classic and then is gone towards the end. In the live action, Ariel sings. She is NOT supposed to do this! Poor unfortunate souls was not as I expected.
When Ariel meets Ursula, aka her aunt, she was first met by her little pets. Her pets talked in the classic and for some reason, not in the live action. Ursula only mentions that Ariel turns human for 3 days and has to kiss Eric in that timeframe or she turns back into a mermaid. She does not mention anything more than that! Ariel also signs a contract to Ursula, not give a scale! Ariel doesn’t hesitate when she gives up her voice in the classic. Ariel is supposed to be found on the shore, not a ship!!
After Ariel gets in the bath, she enjoys it, and doesn’t look like she hates it. And then straight after she is having dinner with the prince. Ariel isn’t seen leaving the room to wander around the palace. The only time she’d leave was at night to go on a boat ride. That’s when Kiss the girl starts others sing it but it is mostly Sebastian. Ariel still is sitting across Eric and is never next to him on the boat ride.
Then starting to get near the end, when Ursula turns human to steal Eric, she never had her necklace off when she was in her room. And the wedding was on a boat, not at the castle. When Ariel gets her voice back, it doesn’t take a million years for her to get it back. Among other things, I was very very disappointed. This movie absolutely DID NOT live up to my expectations. I seriously do not at all recommend seeing this movie. It’s a complete waste of time.
