The movie was a huge payoff for 4 years without any album, single, or music video! It’s very much intended for her fans, & is musically cohesive.
Positives-
Visuals. Visually, the movie was a masterpiece. Each scene is very aesthetically pleasing, & the setting creates the perfect vibe for each song & scene. Costumes were amazing, hair & makeup deserves as many oscars as possible, & the set was absolutely breathtaking.
Music. The songs honestly fit very well with the movie, & the choreography was impeccable. Lyrically, the album was beautiful, & managed to address many social issues without feeling awkward. Sonically, the album had some similarities to Cry Baby, but still remained unique.
Writing. For a first time writer, Melanie blew me away. She created lovable characters with personalities, & creating a GOOD surrealistic horror comedy is no easy feat. The writing definitely isn’t something that would thrive in mainstream media, but as an artistic film, it feels right at home.
Critiques-
Lack of dialogue. When there was dialogue, it flowed easily & naturally, but those moments were less often than I would’ve liked. At points it felt like the movie was just a succession of music videos.
