Crow Country by Kate Constable is, without a doubt, one of the most boring and terrible books I have ever read. From start to finish, this novel failed to capture my attention or draw me in with its lackluster plot and uninspired writing. The story follows Australian teenager Sadie as she discovers a mysterious connection to the land and its indigenous history through a crow. Unfortunately, this intriguing premise quickly spirals into a tedious and uneventful narrative that drags on for far too long. The characters in Crow Country are one-dimensional and forgettable, with little to no development throughout the course of the book. Sadie, the protagonist, is bland and uninteresting, making it difficult to care about her journey or the seemingly important revelations she uncovers. The pacing of the novel is painfully slow, with unnecessarily detailed descriptions and repetitive dialogue that only serve to bog down the already tedious storyline. There is a distinct lack of tension or conflict, leaving the reader with nothing to invest in or root for. Additionally, the author's attempts to incorporate themes of friendship, family, and reconciliation feel forced and contrived, failing to resonate on any emotional level. The indigenous elements of the story also feel surface-level and tokenistic, adding little depth or authenticity to the overall narrative. In conclusion, Crow Country is a dull and unengaging read that fails to deliver on its promising premise. Lacking compelling characters, a cohesive plot, or any sense of urgency, this book falls flat and ultimately feels like a wasted opportunity. I would not recommend wasting your time on this tedious and lackluster novel.
