Love the show! Great dialogue, depth of character, and unique modeling
EXCEPT in the portrayal of ADHD/ADD. We see a spoiled misbehaving child who is acting out and throwing tantrums. Granted, the acting out is acknowledged. But we see spotty examples of destractability and hyperactivity.
I would expect more from this program! The stage scene almost seems more like symptoms of autism. And I would like to have heard WHY parents must deal with it now, rather than later... (They don't grow out of it, building habits, using organizing tools, etc.) so he learns tools he'll need for the rest of his life, etc. And if the facts can't come in the dialogue from the parents experiencing this new diagnosis it should be heard from the teachers and experts. In fact, JANE is a little out of character by NOT having researched it to our core, current knowledge.
BUT, still, so glad this subject was included!! Thank you to the writers!!
The best sources I've seen are
1) "Driven to Distraction",
( ..."sparked a revolution in our understanding of ADHD. Widely recognized as the classic in the field...")
and it's update,
2) "Delivered from Destraction, Getting the Most Out of Life with Attention Deficit Disorder",
both by Edward Hallowell and John Ratey.
Hallowell, a Psychiatrist, has the condition himself! And though one of the many therapies he supports is medication, he himself is not able to take it. He states, "millions of adults suffer from this condition, [approximately 15% of adults] though the vast majority of them remain undiagnosed and untreated." And...”[ADHD/ADD] is a highly misleading description of an intriguing kind of mind. Original, charismatic, energetic, often brilliant, people with ADD have extraordinary talents and gifts embedded in their highly charged but easily distracted minds."
I recommend these books to persons with ADHD/ADD, to their families, to professionals and to others !
