This movie definitely is a thing that only certain people will understand and others will not get. I have had a very similar experience to Owen throughout my whole life and this movie has definitely catches that. I haven't cried harder to a movie than this is and if anyone feels disconnected with society whether there different, feel alone, or have a different out look on things then you should watch this movie.
I see a lot of people making a review on this movie and missing the whole point of it and marking down the stars which is real disheartening but again, this movie isn't for everyone. The colors, the music, the symbolism, the way the characters act. I think it is all perfect. There is two main ways to see the world in this movie. Either you think everything is fine or you think something is wrong. Owen knows something wrong but is denying it because he is scared. Maddy keeps trying to help him and see the true world, his true self but he's too scared to make that step. At the end of the movie he's yelling for yelp, spitting up any liquid he can, he's ripping himself open, and then he keeps apologizing to everything. This is exactly what Maddy did as she started to wake back up but Owen didn't finish the process. Owen always felt like someone was ripping his insides out when he thought about what he liked or who he was. He was too afraid to see what was inside and when he cut himself open and looked, he was finally 'happy'. Maddy says they both have to wake up and continue the show but Owen stays and the movie ends. Its hard to tell what is true in the movie, whether the TV show is real or not but I really think it reflects on real life. I agree when people say the movie is a trans analogy and I really hope people start to understand the movie because this movie definitely hits every point it should on not understanding yourself or the place around you.
