I tried to like this movie and always like to see a female lead with Elsa Pataky giving it her best….. but sadly from her role to even the supporting cast everyone was just over acting everything.
Some have commented that this is a realistic portrayal of an apocalyptic event; to those I say you’re in the land of unicorns and dragons!
The film itself has a confused objective. We have female harassment and bullying in the military, sub standard postings as punishment, action adventure, comedy, personal growth, bad guy rich boy hating everyone, bad guy wanting to change the US, bad guy actually just wanting money….. It literally flicks from cliché to cliché every few minutes with the core value seeming to be our female star constantly saying “never stop fighting” because that is what dad said constantly as she was growing up.
Now the film does have some amusing points, death by pistol thrust into the eye and hanging by razor wire. But these are so few and far between you could combine them into a small trailer and feel content you had seen the movie. The apparent low budget production linked to the overacting and sheer corniness combine to make this unbearable. The cutting down of the outer strong door with all the bad guys in the (not)ultimate “look at me pose” as it slowly drops open. The female baddie stabbed through the throat, shot with a clip of 9mm and having her throat filled with expanding foam still getting up to fight! Or our female star climbing from sea level to the roof with one arm hanging from rungs in under 2 minutes saving the US from destruction with less that 0.35 seconds to spare using a high powered gaming laptop to achieve a 100% interception rate… Oh and not forgetting the repeated Hemsworth cameo appearances which was mildly amusing for the first one but just boring as they repeated the appearance.
For some I can see this movie as being appealing and reviews would confirm this. However for others, you will find it just stupid and illogical with another waste of a female lead who has the potential to do so much more for great story telling. You may even find as we did that this has the feeling of a fan created YouTube film instead of a movie for Netflix.
