This inane revenge fantasy is an example of everything Hollywood gets wrong when it makes war movies. It manages to demean *everyone* who fought against the Nazis, by showing how it "should have" been done. And of course, being a Hollywood fantasy, the plot revolves entirely around film.
The British are brave but bumbling and need the Americans to follow through their plan. The brave Germans who tried to resist Hitler are hapless, only meaningful in so far as they can help the Allies. The Americans are callous, unprincipled and vicious. The French are two-faced and cowardly. In fact, the only people who get any respect in the script are the Nazis themselves, and one cinema owner who corresponds to no historical counterpart at all.
The fact that the whole movie is complete fantasy - is just the final "screw you" to the Allies. "See, this is how you should've ended the war, why didn't you do it and save a million lives?"
This is a terrible movie, and everyone who watches it, me included, comes out a little bit dumber than they started.
