Before i say anything, i really wanted to like this film. I criticised others for critising it, assuming they went in expecting a jump scare filled slasher film. So i went in, expecting the gothic tale i knew it was and when the credits rolled i felt....nothing.
While watching i found myself almost forcing my interest in scenes. Like i HAD to enjoy this film. I loved the character designs and outfits, i loved the gothic tone, i loved the whole aesthetic and Victorian era and i love the genre of dark fantasy, so why didnt i enjoy this.
Well for one, the actual presentation of count orlok felt off. It started strong. He spoke in long syllables and felt almost mesmerising in his speech but as the film went on it got more and more annoying to listen to. As for the design of Nosferatu, they gave him a moustache...this didnt sit well for some reason and made me immediately turn a brow up and his ominous shadowed build up, ultimately felt diminished.
Im gonna sound like a virgin here, but the film had FAR too much sex. Im okay with a scene or so in a movie, but none of them added anything to the film and when you have to sit there watching a LONG and i mean LONG sex scene with Nosferatu himself....yeah just no thanks.
Ultimately this film was just a let down and im really upset to admit that because i wanted to enjoy this so bad. But when you lose all fear for the antagonist, theres a sex scene or possessed orgasm every 20 minutes or so and they kept the same ending that annoyed me from the original film in 1922 with at times jittered pacing...i just cant recommend it to anyone. The only reason i might recommend it is for the cinematography of the film. But beyond that, none of my group enjoyed the film..
I might give it another go in a few years, and maybe change my stance going into it again but for now, its not for me
