I’m not gonna lie, this album kind of grows on you if you’re into Skillet and open to different types of rock and metal. At first I thought this album sucked, but I gave it another chance from start to finish and was pretty happy with it.
Comatose and Rise are my two favorites by them and I think this album has good callbacks to that era with songs like Fire Inside Of Me and Not Afraid. Some decent to great songs like Showtime, All That Matters, and Defector also make this album sound stronger than previous releases. The only bad song is probably Unpopular but if you’re into generic Skillet then that’s more power to you. Happy Wedding Song is also a great track because of how deep it is and how it acts as a sequel to Lucy from Rise.
They keep the trend of having a more pop-rock and electronic-like sound to most songs, but it’s not as obnoxious as the last 2 releases and the approach works with this album. I also love how the album’s heavier with John’s screams and features good guitar work.
Tl;dr - Album is a lot better than recent releases and has a few songs that compare to their best work. In addition, they finally made an album WITH PASSION so it doesn’t feel so dry and robotic like their other stuff. Definitely far from album of the year material and it’s not their best release, but it’s a big step in the right direction and I’m hoping they keep up the momentum. 🤞
