This book has me almost speechless. I am struggling to find the words to express my appreciation of this beautifully written piece of literature. The lesson taught by this book is one that I myself needed, my longing to comfort Kya, yet the similarities I see between myself and the protagonist allowed me to understand so much more of my own being and needs.
The nature vs nurture representation carried throughout this novel is one I have never had the joy of witnessing before. Over years of studying this debate, the literature has presented the argument in ways I have never understood until now. 'Nature had nurtured...'
Yet some of Owens work within this book could be challenged, I believe literature such as this emphasizes and allows readers a clear understanding of the horrifying and unnecessary segregation within society, past and present along with the gross actions individuals inflict on one another. Critical thinking must be used when reading any literature, this book is no exception. Without identifying wrong doings, these things will remain.
'Where the Crawdads Sing' is a novel I will never forget.
