I must say that I found this movie to be the biggest sleeper of the century. As in, you can fall asleep in your AMC recliner and still get the same value for your money as actually staying awake and watching the movie. It's not completely unwatchable, but it's far from good, for those of you considering paying hard earned dollars to watch this.
Spoilers from here on.
Very little wit occurred throughout the film. The "horror" of the movie was exposed early, and its identity was discovered by our main character IMMEDIATELY with no second thoughts or alternative explanations. With an hour and 30 minutes of run time remaining, this removed a lot of the suspense and uncertainty of the movie, and instead turned it into a beast slaying movie, rather than a horror or suspense movie. The side story with the sitcom and the chimp led nowhere. It explained very little besides Jupe's childhood trauma, which hardly warranted the 3 or 4 scenes that were dedicated to these scenes. OJ (main character) discovered that the UFO doesn't like eye contact WITH NO CONTEXT TO EXPLAIN HIS REASON TO TEST IT. He just thought "I wonder if this will work instead of taking shelter in the van" and it did because plot armor maybe? Also, explain the ending to me. Why does this film guy decide suicide is better than accomplishing the goal he set out to do by filming this alien? Why does this UFO go around swooping people up efficiently through its mouth, but when it benefits the main characters, it evolves into its "final form" where it takes an excessively long time to eat things and instead does its little clapping thing which takes over 10 times as long? Why does the electricity in the well camera not either draw the attention of the alien, or not work? There is a flash. There is electricity there. So many things wrong with this film, I don't think I could re-watch it. It's a poor example of horror, suspense, or action. The characters aren't interesting (especially the main character), the plot is boring, and the final action sequence taking down the alien thing is long, drawn out, and not suspenseful. 2/5 because a 1/5 rating seems like I'm just being a troll.
