my (almost certainl unpopular) opinion is this is a tough watch. the story starts off interestingly enough, with as much intreague and surprise to keep the viewer coming back for the next episode. if anything, the reveal is a little too easy and from then on, it gets a little silly, a little ploddy and just a bit lame. character development is non existent and i felt no connection anyone. they were cold, illogical and just not believable. the addition of secret govt departments, men in dark suits ( men in black?) and the UN just made it sillier. I wanted to watch to the end but really struggled to finish the last 2 episodes. wont be watching series 2; even the cliffhanger wasn't. overall, it felt like a year 11 english assignment. all the elements are there, just badly put together. i havent read the original literature or seen the chinese version of 3bp, but hope its better than this twoddle. this is what happens when 50 shades of grey gets the sci fi treatment.

just run out of steam. theres nothing intrinsically wrong with this film, it just feels like rehashed ideas in a lush setting. the visuals are as you'd expect, stunning. the story, while filling in some character back story, seems like a second rate hash up; designed to push the emote buttons for lack of depth and vision. the characters, although now well established, dont command the screen or even carry the flimsy plot. the newer characters, although interesting, arent used as much as they could have been. the action feels contrived and sadly, the most memorable scene is a rip off of the matrix. the shortage of memorable funny lines and knockabout interactions which was a staple of the first 2 films is a sign that they've just run out of ideas. watch to complete the set, but its the weakest of the 3

I want to love GoJ. I want to see fun poked at dynasties who take themselves too seriously. I want the usual superhero stereotypes spun on their heads. In a world bored of superheroes, GoJ should be the vehicle to do all this. It takes tropes from all the usual suspects; watchmen, marvel, 80's arcade games, DC. Hell, even newer stuff like invincible and the boys, and it so wants to be something new, fresh, edgy and relevant. Unfortunately, its takes so much from everywhere else, it looses itself and becomes less of an homage and more of a patchwork superheroes by numbers. You catch yourself picking out characters you've seen before, situations you recognise, places you've already visited and a story which just doesn't grab. Its not bad, but when you reference so much and try to play with the formula, there needs to be a strong element of self and originality. GoL sadly doesn't have it. I may have missed the point of it, but surely the point is, i needed to see the point to make it work. This is superhero marmite for a tictok age
