Felt my soul being sucked out through a straw of stupidity while trying to watch this film.
This took me multiple breaks to get through, given its barely human dialogue, clunky musical numbers and sheer incompetence regarding storyboarding.
I'm not a fan of the animation style but I appreciate/value all the time and effort it took the team of animators to complete this movie. Given how they're treated nowadays, it's nice to throw a little acknowledgement their way for what is a thankless and demanding role.
Looking at just the story itself, I found it incredibly difficult to empathize with Asha and much easier to understand the actions of Magnifico. Understanding that not all wishes are safe and may have unforeseen consequences/outcomes attached is a reasonable viewpoint. The decision to suddenly question the king's methodology only now makes no sense to me. Everyone in Rosas either gives their wish on entry or relinquishes it when turning 18. For free accommodation to a thriving kingdom free of harm it doesn't seem like a bad trade, and one that is working well for everyone there. So to suddenly turn around and start dismantling the entire structure of the kingdom because you don't like that wishes are vetted for safety is ludicrous. This becomes worse when you consider that everyone is being put in harm's way because of the actions of Asha. If an emphasis was laid on the citizens being unhappy or absent from fulfilment due to the lack of desire that was within their wishes, then the film would have made more sense. However, the film doesn't take this approach instead opting to turn Magnifico into a villain just because? There is no logic, no appropriate storytelling and no correct climax to this film because nothing is set up correctly. If you want a frustrating and difficult film to watch then Wish is the perfect film for you. I don't think I can remember a film that worked so hard to make itself so unbearable.
The music is very pop. This isn't necessarily a bad thing and in fact, I thought it was a nice change from the typical songs we see in other Disney films. But omg do the pop songs just keep coming. They all sound the same, there is nothing unique about them and it sounds like they were shooting for a Spotify car playlist rather than musical numbers in an animated film. It is a weird Frankenstein type of music that seems to try and mesh the modern pop music you'll hear on Tiktok with the songs of your classical Disney films. The result is a lyrical, tonal and melodic mess that sounds weirdly fanfiction. If someone told me the songs were written by someone from SoundCloud trying to imitate Lin-Manuel Miranda and Carly Rae Jepsen I'd find it hard not to believe. I really really really really really really like to not hear any of these poor excuses for musical numbers ever again.
Lastly, I'm 90% certain a lot of the positive reviews for this film are either written by bots or by individuals asking AI to write good reviews for this film. Seriously, ask ChatGPT to write a good review for WIsh and you'll end up with something borderline identical to these 5-star reviews on Google. While I don't like to invalidate the individuals who may have enjoyed this film, I'm very doubtful that a lot of these reviews are legitimate as they feel just as auto-generated as the dialogue in this movie.
