I give it 2 stars because it was entertaining enough to watch the whole thing, but Alex was a self-righteous nitwit. I bought the book this was based on a year or two ago and was extremely disappointed in it; I thought it was more disgusting than uplifting. I can't remember how much of this movie was super-close to the book, but the general frustration it left me with was the same. I think I might watch it again just to make a LIST of the stupid choices she made. When the drunk boyfriend who yelled and hit a wall is ASLEEP, there's no need to run off in the middle of the night. Wait until morning and make a more coherent plan. When somebody offers you a horrible job that's going to COST you money for supplies, gas, etc., know enough basic math to say "This doesn't work for me; and oh btw since I clearly have experience as a server and know lots of people in the restaurant industry, why don't I go get a job that will put cash in my pocket TODAY?" And why on earth would you refuse the lifesaving help available from your dad, just because he and your mom had a noisy fight 20 years ago? Even if he was bad then, he's ok now and you're in the most desperate need. Why would you take a chance inviting your Tinder date to the home of your extremely prickly client? Everything she did was just dumb, dumb, dumb. So many times, options were available that any normal person would have taken, but nope, let's go sleep on the floor of the ferry station. And the kicker of it all is that at the end, she doesn't just get the relief of a decent roof over her head and a car that runs (which is ALL a lot of people ever even dream of) but she gets to go to college and enjoy the continuing benefits of family housing and a daycare plan even though she's totally broke! Wow.
