If you are a purist who expects every sequel to be the same exact as the ones previous, you won't like this.
If you like different perspectives and actual storytelling to continue a universe, this was fantastic.
Without giving the story away, this sequel is a big pivot from the original. I think what turns the purists off is that this isn't the dark and gritty matrix. Everything has changed. Accept it and you will be entertained. Or cling to what has alrrady been done and hate it. Like the entire premise of the Matrix universe, it is a choice you can make.
And to really wax philosophical, after seeing the whole thing, there is a known secondary story here that could be its own premise, which is the subtle but profound difficulty the machines have when trying to create a world that humans accept. That conflict could be the main character in many ways. No matter how hard it tries, it can't recreate reality.
